It
is summer. The sun shines brightly and it is hot outside.
Riya
and her friends have a holiday. But they cannot play outside.
Riya sits with her friends inside the house. She is sad. Her friends are sad, too. ‘We do not have school today. We want to play and have fun,’ says Soma.
Riya’s
mother brings juice for Riya and her friends. She sees their gloomy faces. She
says, ‘Let us make a picture. Let us make a picture with paper.’
Riya
and her friends look at Riya’s mother.
Jassie
says, ‘A picture cannot be made with paper.’ He is shaking his head.
Anya
says, ‘A picture is made with pencils and crayons.’
Riya’s
mother says, ‘Everyone gather around. Let us sit at the table. We will make a
picture with paper.’
Riya, Jassie, Anya and Soma sit down at the table.
Riya’s
mother puts a big sheet of white paper, many sheets of red, yellow, green,
brown and blue paper, four scissors, and a glue stick on the table.
The
children watch as she cuts a big yellow square and pastes it in the centre of
the white paper. She cuts a red triangle and pastes on top of the square.
Riya
shouts, ‘I know. This is a yellow house with a red roof!’
Riya’s
mother says, ‘Now each of you cut different shapes from the coloured paper.
Paste them on the white sheet. Make a picture with the yellow house.
Riya and her friends cut shapes from the coloured paper.
Jassie cuts a blue rectangle. He is sticking it on the house. It is the door of the house.
Soma
cuts out brown rectangles and green circles. She is sticking them around the
house. She says, ‘Look! I have made trees.’
Riya
cuts an orange circle. She is making a sun to paste on the picture.
Anya
cuts out many brown squares. She is sticking them in front of the house. They
make a road to the house.
Jassie
laughs and says, ‘We are playing with paper and making a picture.’
Soma
says, ‘This is so much fun.’
Riya smiles at her mother. She says, ‘Thank you, Mother.’
Her
friends say, ‘Thank you.’
Riya’s
mother says, ‘You are welcome. Is this not better than playing outside?’
All the friends say, ‘Oh yes!’
