A road winds between tall trees. It is
morning but the sky is filled with dark clouds. It is raining hard. Under the
toadstool sits a frog. A rabbit peeps from its hole and the bird is warm in its
nest. All the animals are in their homes.
A little dog sits under a tree. Raindrops
fall from the leaves on the dog. Drip! Drip! Drip! The dog has no home. He is
wet and sad.
The poor dog tells itself, ‘Woof! Woof! I
am wet. I am cold. I want a home.
Aarti and Rishi come down the road. They
are walking in the rain. Are they wet? No, they are not. They have umbrellas.
‘I love the raindrops,’ says Aarti.
‘I love splashing in the puddles,’ says
Rishi. He jumps in a puddle.
Aarti and Rishi see the little wet dog.
‘Look, Aarti!’ Rishi points out. ‘There is
a dog under the tree.’
‘He is a wet dog,’ says Aarti.
Aarti picks up the dog. To whom does the
dog belong?
Rishi looks behind the tree. ‘To nobody,’
He says.
‘Poor dog! He is cold,’ says Aarti.
‘I think he is lost,’ says Rishi.
The little dog looks at the children. He
wants to tell them, ‘I am lost. I do not have a home.’ But he only says, ‘Woof!’
The children walk down the road. The dog
is in Aarti’s arms. The dog feels warm and goes to sleep. Aarti and Rishi look
everywhere but they do not find owner of the dog.
‘Let’s take him home,’ says Aarti.
‘Let’s take him to Father and Mother,’
says Rishi.
At home, the children put the dog on a
table and rub his wet fur with a towel. Aarti and Rishi dry the dog. They tell
Father and Mother about him.
‘Please can we keep him?’ Aarti asks.
Father asks. ‘To whom does he belong?’
‘Nobody,’ says Rishi. ‘He is a lost dog.’
‘Alright!’ Mother says with a smile. ‘You
can keep him for a pet.’
Aarti and Rishi run to Grandfather and Grandmother.
They want to show their new pet.
‘Look, Grandfather!’ Aarti shows him the
dog. ‘We have a pet.’
Rishi asks, ‘Do you like him?’
‘He is nice. What is his name?’ says
Grandfather.
‘Do you want to call him Rex? Asks Grandmother
Rex says, ‘Woof! Woof!’ He thinks, ‘Yippee!
I have a home, now. I have a name. I have a family. I am so happy.’
Next day, the family took a photo.
Grandfather, Grandmother sat on the sofa. Father, Mother stood behind them.
Aarti and Rishi sat on the rug with Rex. They are a happy family.
Rex says, ‘Woof! Woof!’ He means, ‘I love my home. I love my family.’
